This chapter introduces concepts of group and elementary items, shows how multi-level records may be defined and manipulated, and introduces a practical exercise designed to develop understanding of the use of records in COBOL. The use of the REDEFINES clause to define variant records is also introduced in section 4. This may be omitted on a first reading.
