In this paper, we present a progressive work for developing an assistive aid for visually impaired, which will help them in color identification, currency denomination recognition, obstacle detection as well as reading newspapers and books. The device is conceptualized as a portable device with all the processing being done on chip and finally aural output being produced. The device is tested in a restricted environment and gave different accuracies for different modules. The colors are identified with an accuracy of 89.1% whereas various currency denominations are recognized with an accuracy of 88.25%. The obstacle detection is successful all the times, leading to an accuracy of 100%. The algorithm developed for text extraction in the reading module gives a precision rate of 86.7% and recall of 80.7%.
