TEMPEST procedures are a series of protection measures that are used to protect the IT infrastructure against electromagnetic eavesdropping. This paper presents the main characteristics and applications of the TEMPEST procedures and a number of real world examples in which these procedures are applicable. Also, the paper, provides an analytical method to determine the minimum level of attenuation that should be meet, by an electromagnetically shielded room, in order to ensure TEMPEST protection of the in-room computer infrastructure. The method had been tested and validated by measurements performed in the Special Telecommunications Service (STS) TEMPEST laboratory.
