5. FIR Filters

One of the most frequent computations in signal processing is that of a finite impulse response (FIR) filter. Let x0,x1,x2,⋯ be the sequence obtained by sampling the signal at times 0,Δt,2Δt,3Δt,⋯ . Filtering the signal is the computation of z0,z1,⋯ where zi=∑j=0n−1xi+jhj,i=0,1,2,⋯ , where h0,h1,⋯,hn−1 are known as the weights of taps of the filter. Such a filter is known as an n-tap filter.
