Python in CS1 - not

John Middlemass Hunt · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2015

In 2014 Python became the most popular language for introductory programming courses. For Fall 2013 we switched our CS1 course over to Python from Java for the time. Now for Fall 2015 we are switching our CS1 course back to Java. In this paper I discuss the reasons, issues that we struggled with that I did not notice in the literature. The widespread introduction of Python in introductory curriculum raises interesting questions about the role of object first and arrays in curriculum. These significant philosophical issues have largely been ignored.
