Acne is the disease manifesting from a multifactorial process involving the pilosebaceous appendages, and although the exact mechanism is unknown, four biological mechanisms are believed to play critical roles in the formation of a lesion: 1. increased sebum production, 2. aberrant keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation, 3. enhanced bacterial growth and metabolism, and 4. irritation and inflammation.
