ATN, Automata, Expectation

Of the four knowledge sources necessary to language comprehension as discussed by Rumeihart, the syntactic has been of greatest interest in man-machine comparative studies — largely because, of the four, it is the one most easily subject to productive model-building, though there is much controversy concerning how it is structured and used in human language processing. None the less, a powerful modelling tool has been developed by Rumelhart and others: the augmented transition network (ATN). A consideration of ATN research foregrounds many of the key issues in comparative studies, with regard not only to syntactic knowledge but, to a lesser extent, to the other kinds as well.
