The Importance of Reality

Eric D. Klopfer · The MIT Press eBooks · 2008

This chapter shows how the real world can be effectively mixed with the virtual world in augmented reality games. It describes a game called Environmental Detectives (ED), which was designed as a part of the Games to Teach project at MIT, funded by the Microsoft iCampus initiative. ED was the first of a long series of augmented reality handheld games (ARHGs). These games fall on the light side of the augmented reality spectrum, providing players with some occasional virtual information that they must integrate with their real-world experience. The differences in how the players felt about their roles in the virtual and augmented environments are discussed.
