Managing the investigation

Peter Tickner · 2012

There are some basic steps that can keep the management of the investigation on course: Selection of the right team for the investigation; Making sure that the team is fully briefed and understood the task and the terms of reference; Holding regular sessions with the team to check progress with lines of enquiry; Keeping adequate records of all investigative decisions, especially when and why they were taken; Keep the management in the picture but do not let them interfere; Keep properly indexed records of all intelligence, evidence and supporting documentation; Keep on top of new information and evidence as it is uncovered by team. Have the courage to change tack if new evidence comes to light, but do not forget to keep the original end in mind; Keep a tight rein on external costs and consumption of internal resources; Use legal, forensic, accounting and HR experts sparingly and wisely − but do not be afraid to ask for their opinions or assistance.
