Using Vocal Coordination Instruction to Help the Inaccurate Singer

M any children experience difficulty singing on pitch despite the emphasis on singing in public school music curricula. It is well documented that inaccurate singers present a persistent problem for music educa-tors. Results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAER 1974) revealed that 50% of the 9-year-olds, 450/0 of the 13-year-olds, and 35% of the 17-year-olds sampled sang "America " with unacceptable pitch. Individual investigators have doc-umented widely varying percentages of inaccurate singers in their research. Greenberg (1970) found 10 % of the elementary school subjects sampled to be inaccurate singers, and Eikum (1963) found 74.5 % of his upper-elementary
