Many people who come across NLP want to know whether it is backed up by research. ‘Even its greatest enthusiasts are hard-pressed to find serious scientific research that backs up its wilder claims’, wrote Fran Abrams of NLP in the Times Educational Supplement in 2004. 1 Is this a fair comment? In this chapter we examine the research that is available into, and relevant to, NLP. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
