Technological System‐Level Failures
Michael Bell · 2016
This chapter focuses on the technological reasons for system failures and covers a significant portion of the product development life cycle. Technological system-level failures includes: (1) enterprise-level architecture failures; (2) software development-level failures; (3) testing-level failures; and (4) operation-level failures. Enterprise architecture patterns, system integration, software asset distribution, and system federation are the fundamental categories in which architecture-level mistakes could be found. The broken process, unqualified or untrained development teams, lack of proper development facilities, and shortage of budgets are the chief causes for software development-level failures. Testing-level failures are all about the lack of capabilities to detect system issues. It is about disregarding system defects. Operation-level failures occur in a production environment. There are an infinite number of reasons for a system to fail in production. But the most critical disaster that damages an enterprise is the inability to ensure business continuity.
