Streaming Media Encryption

Heather Yu · Auerbach Publications eBooks · 2006

This chapter discusses an important aspect of streaming media content protection: streaming media encryption to ensure confidentiality and assist content access control. Streaming media refers to digital media being transmitted through a network, from a server to a client, in a streaming or continuous fashion. Due to the large size of multimedia data streams, the time constraint for continuous playback of streaming media, and the potential cost overhead for decryption at the client device, streaming media encryption imposes challenges in many applications. The format-compliant requirement indicates that encryption has to be compliant with the scalable coding schemes to provide adequate quality of service. Encryptionite by Secure Media uses the Indexed Encryption technique for secure streaming media distribution. The availability of streaming media services is providing us with an exciting new set of applications. The market for Internet audio and video streaming has been expanding quickly since the mid-1990s.
