Model‐Based System Architecture

The discipline model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has become very famous in systems engineering in the last years. This chapter presents the three features of a model as defined by Stachowiak in his book about general model theory. The authors second the features of Stachowiak and add some more to give a definition of how they understand and use the term ‘model’ and respectively ‘the system model’ in the context of MBSE. The definition differentiates between the model and the repository. From the user's point of view both repositories (the requirements database and the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) model in a file) act like a single model. Modeling can be applied at different levels of intensity. As an example, the chapter shows the SYSMOD intensity model. The three main levels define each a primary modeling goal: communication, traceability and specification.
