The project and project management
Tony Cornford, Steve Smithson · 1996
Research projects have many characteristics in common with information systems development projects. However, it is surprising the number of students who are experts in the theory of information systems project management, but seem unable to ‘practise what they preach’ when it comes to managing their own research. Any project comprises a number of different activities; some of these have to precede others while some can be performed in parallel. It is essential to meet the project deadline and the only way to be confident of achieving this is to plan out the project in advance. Many student projects have almost been ruined because the student spent too much time on the initial activities and had to rush the later parts; the reason, the lack of a project plan.
