Semantics and Syntactics for Retrieval from Full Text

Julian Warner · The MIT Press eBooks · 2009

This chapter focuses on the models of semantics and syntactics for full-text retrieval and presents examples of information retrieval from full text. It examines the material basis for communication as well as phrase searching, the differences and similarities between semantics and syntactics, and full-text indexing of syntagma and paradigm as well as the message and messages for selection. It also discusses the difficulty of finding two uniquely co-occurring words in the context of linguistics, information theory, and the experience accumulated by using information retrieval systems. Finally, the chapter considers signification in written language and transformations on written language based on the interaction between syntagma and paradigm.
