Noise Circuit Analysis

P.J. Fish · 1993

In any circuit there are a number of noise sources operating simultaneously. There is thermal noise from resistors and from the resistive elements of other components, shot noise from semiconductor devices, excess (1) noise from both the above, and perhaps popcorn noise from the semiconductors. In order to deal with the problem of noise both from a design and a trouble-shooting point of view, we need a method of analysis and some standard method for comparing performance. In particular, we need to be able to calculate the net effect of a (possibly) large number of noise sources within a circuit. It would be useful in this exercise to have noise models of components or even whole circuit modules such as amplifiers, and in order to compare the performance of different circuits we need recognised figures of merit. In addition, we should like to be able to use these analysis techniques in order to optimise performance.
