Ecological Cybernetics, Virtual Reality, and Virtual Heritage

Maurizio Forte · The MIT Press eBooks · 2007

This chapter examines the cognitive attributes of virtual systems as created in virtual heritage. In virtual heritage there is a tendency to enhance the amazing aesthetic features despite the lack of informative/narrative feedback and cognitive research within the virtual worlds themselves. The chapter argues that the importance of the virtual reality systems in the applications of cultural heritage should focus on the capacity to change ways and approaches of learning, and also makes the case for the use of ecological cybernetics in investigating virtual reality and virtual heritage. It first discusses the concepts of virtual reality and cultural heritage from the perspective of ecology before turning to the application of virtual reality in cultural heritage. The chapter also considers the frame in cybernetic terms as well as the contexts and rules of learning.
