COPE appears as the first practical wireless network coding system which can improve network throughput. However it waits for coding opportunities passively. Although excessive intersections of flows may bring forth more coding opportunities, they may make some nodes overloaded. To solve these problems, we propose load-balanced COPE-aware routing (LBCAWR), which actively detects the potential coding opportunities, and at the same time takes into account the load factor of each node in the route discovery process, then according to the proposed path metric considering potential coding opportunities, load factor and hop counts selects the best path. LBCAWR can find more potential coding opportunities for COPE and reduce network congestion. Simulation results in NS2 show that LBCAWR can improve network throughput, increase delivery rate and reduce transmission delay, compared with COPE.
