The Reasons for Rules
Frederick Schauer · Oxford University Press eBooks · 1993
This chapter examines the issues related to the relation between rules and suboptimizing decision procedures. It provides an argument in favour of rules, focusing on the distrust of certain classes of decision makers with respect to certain kinds of decisions. It suggests that one of the chief virtues of ruled-based decision making stems from a desire to protect against decision maker error in direct application of background justifications.
