Back‐up and Media Management

Andrew Chambers, Graham K. Rand · 2012

This chapter examines the issues relating to protection of data through adequate back-up, and includes details of the related practices of secure storage and media handling. The situation is exacerbated by the widespread use of personal computers (PCs) in business, where the option to take the necessary precautions with data is usually left to the discretion of the user. The formal data handling and security techniques that emerged from mainframe installations over the years do not readily translate into the more informal and open world of the PC. Control objectives for back-up and media management involve providing the means to recover promptly and accurately from system failure or invalid processing situations and ensuring that the organization's data is adequately protected from loss, damage and leakage.
