The Pitfalls of Client/Server Development Projects

Paul Cullen · Auerbach Publications eBooks · 2020

The management of client/server projects involves unique pitfalls within traditional systems development categories. As with a traditional development project, documenting requirements should be the start of a client/server development project. The client/server systems development process should include test plans with expected result, actual result, and disposition of differences. While the goal of a client/server system is to be user friendly and provide online help functions, these systems should additionally have the traditional types of documentation available to operate, maintain, and use the system. If the client/server system is being developed to replace an existing legacy system, hopefully users of the existing system will be involved in the prototype review. As with all development projects, essential to avoiding or managing client/server development pitfalls is effective project management. A final pitfall to watch out for is a target date set by senior management to be committed to by the project team.
