Retrieval from Full Text

Julian Warner · The MIT Press eBooks · 2009

This chapter focuses on information retrieval from full text, a further transformation of selection labor made possible by modern information technologies. It presents examples of full-text retrieval and discusses the semantics of written language as well as the relation between full text retrieval and the labor theoretic approach. It applies the labor theoretic approach to identify specific changes in description process and search labor and considers the distinction between term and phrase searching within the framework of linguistics. It also examines conceptions of language, along with retrospect and prospect in full-text retrieval, and contingent elements as opposed to inescapable elements.
