The Mobile 3D Graphics API
Apress eBooks · 2007
One of the most exciting optional APIs for game developers is the Mobile 3D Graphics (M3G) API, defined in JSR 184. From a business perspective it’s not necessarily the most important optional API because a 3D game is generally costlier to produce than a game without 3D. In addition—although studies show that many people will play games on their handset even at home where they have access to their computers and game consoles—simple, familiar games are typically more popular on handsets than games that boast amazing graphics. It’s difficult to impress your players with graphics on a small device because they’ve seen more impressive graphics on the big screens of their game consoles. I’m not saying that 3D games are never worth the bother on a small device—just that you need to be that much more creative to use 3D in a fun and original way to make it pay.
