BROWNIAN MOTION AND NOISE

Robert M. Mazo · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2008

This chapter treats Brownian motion as a fundamental limit on the precision of experimental measurements. As mechanical examples, the oscillations of a small mirror mounted on a torsion fibre are discussed in connection with the experiments of Gerlach and Lehrer, and Kappler. The effect of Brownian motion on the precision of a Golay infra red detector cell is treated. A general overview of electrical noise in linear circuits including an elementary derivation of Nyquist's formula, is given.
