For illustrative purposes, imagine that All About HatWare is a family-owned, hat manufacturing company that sells semifinished hats to a number of different companies. There are three aspects of All About HatWare&s;s enterprise business architecture: business goals, business processes, and team structure. As with many other family-owned enterprises, some simple enterprise and functional processes alone comprised the majority of All About HatWare&s;s business processes. This is to say that different teams performed the different processes in order to accept orders, bill customers, and analyze sales, all in a rather fragmented way, without any regard for the organization&s;s overall effectiveness. To rank all of the new initiatives within the new IT roadmap, All About HatWare&s;s management decided to place the initiatives in a matrix that guided them to start the roadmap by working on the "A" initiatives that were high in business value, but that also might have high associated risks.
