ALLFIWIB: Distributed Knowledge Based Systems for Customer Support in Financial Services

Hans Ulrich Buhl, Hans-Jürgen König, Andreas Will · 1993

In the markets for financial services we observe the trend to offer each customer individual, tailored solutions to his special financial problems. An optimal solution with respect to the customer’s goal, often is a combination of different financial products. There are two main problems in finding such an optimal mix of financial products. First, the historically grown branches of financial services like banking and insurance lead to the geographical and functional distribution of data and knowledge among organizations, experts, and information systems. The customer consultant often lacks the competence of combining this distributed knowledge while working on problem solving. Considering this, the goal of ALLFIWIB is to develop knowledge based system prototypes working together to solve complex customer problems by combining knowledge from different domains in the area of financial services [1]. Second, in many cases good mixed solutions - even for simple goals like maximizing the present value of cash flows after taxes - are not yet known. ALLFIWIB claims not only to model usual supply processes, but to design ‘surprising’ solutions by applying new knowledge about good product combinations
