Open Architecture and Standards in Mobile Health

Julia E. Hoffman, Kelly M Ramsey, Deborah L. Estrin · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2014

Open source software development—wherein both the development process and the resulting code are freely available—has enabled massive collaboration and rapid innovation. As healthcare service delivery increasingly integrates technology, the lessons of the open-source movement should be brought to bear in order to optimize the advancement of healthcare products and systems. This chapter argues that a true marketplace for mHealth solutions will require the adoption of open standards and open architectures to ease development for individual producers, create clinical efficiencies and ensure quality control, and provide common interfaces and protections to ensure the safety and best outcomes for patients and healthcare providers.
