The Detection of Faking Through Word Use

Matthew Ventura · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2011

This chapter outlines various approaches to assessing social dispositions through analysis of language. Research is reviewed regarding how particular word use patterns measured through the Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC) tool can detect personality and deceptive dispositions. Based on this review it is proposed that faking dispositions could be assessed using some of the word features used to detect deception. Additionally, n-gram analysis and tools such as Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) may be useful in detecting faking-like content in writing. All these approaches are considering in the context of construct response questions requiring the participant to write about a particular construct.
