New information search system in social networks application to disaster event analysis

Furthermore, with the advent of Web 2.0 technology, there is an explosion of communitycontributed multimedia content available online. As we know, the intrinsic attribute of Web 2.0 by Hong et al. (201) and O’Reilly (2007) is to facilitate for sharing information in interactive and collaborative manners on the internet. By virtue of the attribute, many social network recommendation systems emerge as assistants for the people concerned all over the world. They usually employ the user-contributed content as the information resources and allow users to edit handily and extract key information. Additionally, hypertext links made between the networks such as blogs have been described as conversation, affiliation, or readership, implying a form of implicit social struc- 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Current trends Today’s current trends in communicating among people has been increasingly widened the horizons of their platforms from inter personal to international in cases of worldwide major events including natural and man-made disasters through social networks such as Facebook, Flicker, Twitter, and YouTube etc. as described in Boyd & Ellison (2007), Johnson & Oppenheim (2007), Ralph et al. (2005) and Bass et al. (2008). As a consequence, more and more information are publicly available from these various social network platforms so that the social actions and interactions among people and events can be identified. This trend can lead to enable for establishing an automatic information search system in social networks. Moreover, the practicality of this trend is boosted by the recent initiatives ture in Marlow (2006) and Mika (2004). However, there is little attention about the application of Social Network Analysis (SNA) for use in information search systems. Recent studies by Borgatti (2003) suggested that the social network of a person has a significant impact on his/her information acquisition. Furthermore SNA offers methods that enable the identification of important individuals or groups who could have some influential information over the social network platforms.
