Virtual token-passing Ethernet proposal using programmable hardware

This paper presents the design and first experimentalresults of VTPE (Virtual Token-passing Ethernet). VTPEis a deterministic protocol for real-time applicationsbased on shared Ethernet, aimed to be used either in smallprocessing power processors or in powerful ones. It isbased on implicit token rotation similar to the virtualtoken-passing used in the P-NET protocol. The VTPEimplementation leads to reduced program code, thusfitting in small microcontrollers' memory and imposinglow communication overhead.
