Working memory and short-term memory storage

Gerald Tehan, Kaye Mills · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2007

This chapter addresses whether there is a common short-term verbal memory system that supports simple (e.g. forward serial recall span) and more complex (e.g. backward serial recall) verbal span tasks. It presents data demonstrating that phonological coding appears to be used in both forward and backward recall, suggesting that the same memory store might be involved in simple and complex verbal memory. One contrast is that word length effects are present for forward but not backward recall, and this is offered for further investigation.
