Free Speech and “Democratic Persuasion”
Larry Alexander · 2015
Abstract This chapter presents a response to the previous chapter’s account of free speech and democratic persuasion. It begins with a discussion of the paradox of liberalism. It then argues that it is a mistake to think that Chapter 19’s speech and subsidy approach to hate groups is not coercive. While it does not send people to jail for voicing illiberal views, it does coercively extract resources from them to support views they oppose, leaving them with fewer resources with which to advance their views.
