Who is Already Using Condition Monitoring and What Techniques are Available?
Institution of Engineering and Technology eBooks · 1990
The evolution of condition monitoring into a modern engineering discipline can be traced to the earliest days of the industrial revolution through the requirement to monitor and control steam engine plant and equipment. The development of condition-based maintenance has been forced by the increasing trend towards technological complexity in industrial plant and machinery, together with a reduction in equipment manning levels which has arisen as a consequence of automation, and the imposition of stricter operating regimes brought about by the current competitive manufacturing environment. These factors emphasize the necessity for ensuring that initial equipment reliability levels are high and that these levels are maintained throughout the systems working life. In this chapter, illustration of the development and maturity of condition-based maintenance and the techniques now in use to implement condition monitoring is presented.
