Multiparty Conferencing in SIP

Radhika Ranjan Roy · 2018

We describe multipoint multimedia conferencing among the multiple parties using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). We explain that multiparty multimedia conferencing is a hugely complicated application. The requirements of multipoint multimedia conferencing go far beyond the capabilities of SIP signaling messages, and SIP is being used in conjunction with newly developed application protocols like Binary Floor Control Protocol. Media bridging/mixing is another complicated application that is needed for making conferencing architecture scalable. However, we address only the basic third-party centralized multiparty conferencing that use the basic SIP capabilities described in Request for Comment 3261. All other complicated multipoint multimedia conferencing rich in more intelligent multi media functionalities, including application sharing, have not been addressed for the sake of brevity.
