ZigBee is a standard for wireless sensor network and Internet of things based on IEEE 802.15.4 low-data rate wireless network standard. Operations of a ZigBee network tightly depend on the self-organizing network joining among ZigBee coordinator, routers, and end devices. The network configuration parameters and distributed address assignment mechanism defined in ZigBee specification will cause the occurrence of ZigBee orphan devices in some conditions and this situation will affect the functions and operations of a ZigBee network. This study focuses on the orphan devices problem and proposes a 2-phase scheme to decrease the number of orphan devices. The study is still on going and some preliminary results are presents in the paper. Some key points need to be concerned in the works are also presents.
