The Influence of Microprocessors on the Evolution of Numerical Control Systems

The paper analyses the evolution of numerical control system design during the past twenty years and attempts to project this evolution over the next twenty years, taking into consideration the impact of the microprocessor as the basic system building block. The microprocessor approach to system design is examined in detail and a specific example of such a system design is presented.
