Classes, Collections, Assortments, and Individuals
Ruth Barcan Marcus · 1995
Abstract Set theory obscures ordinary distinctions between assortments, collections, and classes. This paper argues that the puzzles generated by assimilating ordinary collections to classes reflect the same difficulties as the puzzles that result from equating proper names with definite descriptions. It is then shown how these ordinary distinctions can be articulated within an alternative logical framework, namely, the intensional modal system S42.
