MPEG-DASH-based framework for improving end-user video experience in heterogeneous multi-network wireless environments

Tim Casey, Gabriel‐Miro Muntean · 2016

The recent advances in both high specification mobile devices and increased user expectations in terms of access to multimedia content have put pressure on the existing mobile networks in terms of traffic. Many users use their mobile devices as their primary means of connecting to the Internet. However most of these users are constrained by the data caps imposed by the network providers and seek connectivity to alternative networks where possible. Blindly attempting to connect to WiFi networks while moving can result in frequent disruptions to service and overall decrease in the total amount of data transferred by a mobile user. This paper introduces an innovative MPEG-DASH-based Framework for improving end-user video experience in heterogeneous multi-network wireless environments (MDF). MDF combines the practice of content segmentation used by DASH clients and servers with a new network selection mechanism to improve enduser video quality of experience.
