RFID Data Management: Issues, Solutions, and Directions

Quan Z. Sheng, Kerry L. Taylor, Zakaria Maamar, Paul Brebner · The Internet of Things · 2008

The driving force behind the major shift is the increasing affordability of Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, the convergence of industrial standards, the added value offered to applications, and the efforts that electronic product code global and industry giants like Wal-Mart have put into the use of RFID technology. This chapter discusses the main techniques for RFID data processing and integration, a central concern in applying RFID in real-world applications, and proposes a set of criteria for assessing the existing RFID techniques and products. RFID uses radio-frequency waves to transfer data between tagged objects and readers without line of sight, providing an excellent support for automatic identification. The Siemens RFID Middleware is a RFID data management system, which provides an integrated solution for RFID applications. The ability of RFID technology to precisely identify objects at low cost and without line of sight creates many new and exciting application areas.
