Mobile Devices and 3D Interactions

David Bertolo · 2016

This chapter starts by justifying the choice of mobile devices (MD) and more specifically tactile multi-touch tablets. It presents the different types of MDs as well as all the possible different entry systems. Next, the chapter develops some points concerning mobile ergonomics before describing the state of the art of 3D interactive techniques on such devices. These interactive techniques mainly relate to the manipulation (translation, rotation and re-dimensioning) of 3D objects on MDs where the screen display is by nature two-dimensional. The term mobile device encompasses a large number of portable units that treat and exchange data in mobile situations. The first MDs were mobile data terminals (MDT) and were found in professional cars such as police cars, taxis and ambulances. The chapter finishes by presenting the languages and grammars of movements as well as a classification of the interactions.
