Analog cellular is known as a first generation wireless information telephone network. There are up to six incompatible analog cellular standards world-wide, even though they have the underlying FM FDMA mode of operation. The main aim of the so-called second generation systems was (i) to go digital, (ii) to have a single standard. The first has taken place; but the second has not been achieved. The mode of operation will feature time division multiple access (TDMA), but matters like frame timing, method of modulation and error-correction code procedures differ from one global system to another. The three main systems in use at present are: GSM Global system for mobile communications ; which also includes DCS 1800/PCS 1900 ADC American digital cellular: called D-AMPS. An alternative candidate is CDMA JDC Japanese digital cellular: PHS can also be associated here
