THE NEED TO CONSIDER DIGITAL IMAGING SYSTEMS IS PREDICATED ON recognition of stereological principles and quantitative metallography/materialography as essential concepts in materials science. The application of quantitative metallography/materialography in materials science requires the measurement of microstructures. It may be argued that the study of materials cannot be termed a “science” if it does not use quantitative methods.
