Images: indexing for accessibility in a multi-lingual environment – challenges and perspectives

Élaine Ménard · The Indexer · 2009

Elaine Ménard presents the results of a research project that sought to identify the differences, in a multilingual environment, between indexing a set of images representing common objects using either a controlled vocabulary approach, or a free or uncontrolled vocabulary approach. The differences are explored from the terminological, perceptual and structural points of view, Consideration is given to the factors that may have influenced the choice of indexing terms, such as language, indexing experience and indexing guidelines, and suggestions are made for further research.
