When does an exponential intersect its logarithm

Christopher T. Lenard, Simon J. Smith · Vinculum · 2014

In most VCE and first year university calculus texts, the logarithm function loga(x) is de?ned to be the inverse of the exponential function a x and the graph of loga(x) is obtained by reflecting the graph of a x about the line y = x. Typically it is assumed that a > 1, the case of greatest practical interest, so that a diagram much like Figure 1 is used to illustrate the situation. For example, a picture very similar to Figure 1 appears in the VCE texts by Anastasio et al. (2005, pp. 411, 507) and Evans et al. (2009, p. 430) and the popular university texts by Briggs et al. (2013, p. 438) and Stewart (2012, p. 404).
