Using Object‐Oriented Patterns

Bart Baesens, Aimée Backiel, Seppe vanden Broucke · 2012

This chapter discusses a number of best practices and solutions for common problems we will encounter when creating object-oriented applications with Java. As such, it starts with a general introduction on programming patterns, before delving deeper into the patterns. The goal is to show the patterns that also teach us how to make architectural design choices and how each choice allows certain freedoms and takes away others. The chapter takes us through a handful of the original Gang of Four design patterns. It is presented in a relaxed style, where we can see how we can spot it in real-life projects, how we can use it ourselves, and then common pitfalls we should watch out for. Finally, the chapter provides a brief overview of some third-party libraries that we may find useful when starting new projects.
