Server-Based Bitrate Allocation in Content Delivery Network

Today, with the rapid development of video streaming, concurrence video transmission traffic is increasing on communication channels. Each type of video streaming has various bit rates and demands a certain range of transmission rate. This creates conflicts among these data when the available bandwidth is limited. In this paper, we propose a server-side-based rate allocation algorithm under Content Delivery Network(CDN). Instead of just considering bit rate selection from the perspective of network condition and client condition, we combine user experience with video bit rate allocation to improve viewer engagement to the greatest extent. Our aim is to enable both content providers and CDNs to make greater fortune with guaranteed video quality while uses are watching programs. Through test bed experiments and analysis, we demonstrate that high-value clients can achieve preferable bitrates comparing to HTTP live streaming(HLS) algorithm developed by Apple Inc. So it will bring CDNs preferable revenue.
