Modeling for Product Release Planning
Günther Ruhe · Auerbach Publications eBooks · 2010
This chapter provides the different components of release planning models. Decisions in product release planning are primarily related to features and their assignment to releases. From analyzing industrial software product release planning projects in the domain of telecommunications, observed that features are often dependent on each other. Planning without investigating the resource constraints is risky, as the resulting plans are likely to fail because of the potential lack of sufficient resources for the implementation of the features. A simplified modeling approach introduced is intended to influence release planning strategies by at least some consideration of risk. The traditional perspective of planning is to search for just one solution, which is qualified in some specific aspect. The quality of each solution is measured by a stated utility function. The actual composition of the planning function depends on the specific characteristics of the problem.
