Sample cases: systems of ontological categories

Jan Westerhoff · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2005

This chapter looks at different examples of systems of ontological categories beginning with Aristotle and ending with a recent system employed in Artificial Intelligence. It then isolates different common features, both regarding the content of the systems, i.e., the categories they employ, as well as regarding their structure, the way in which these categories are organized. These common features will serve as a yardstick for measuring the adequacy of different proposed definitions of ontological categories to be discussed in the following pages.
