In cloud computing systems VMs also require the capability of migration between different physical servers for some specific purposes like bandwidth between VMs, security consideration, demands of different tenants of the cloud data center and so on, making VM migration is very important feature for cloud computing in cloud data centers. As is known that VM migration in L2 (Layer-2) network is naturally supported because the IP address of VM is not going to change which will not affect the upper layer communication sessions of VM, but additional solutions are needed to support VM migration across L3 (Layer-3) network for the reason that the IP address of VM maybe change which will interrupt the upper layer communication sessions of VM. This paper surveys the proposed L3 VM migration solutions and finally proposes a new scheme to support VM migration across L3 network by introducing ID/Locator separation.
